It pushed console gaming forward with features like a built-in hard drive and integrated online play through Xbox Live, laying the groundwork for the future of online gaming. Its controller, the bulky “Duke,” was divisive for its size but introduced the now-standard offset analog stick layout. Microsoft later refined it with the smaller, more comfortable “Controller S,” which became the default and won over players with its ergonomic design. It established Microsoft as a serious competitor and set the stage for the hugely successful Xbox 360.
